BOSTON – Learning company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt today announced that the California State Board of Education has approved California HMH Science Dimensions © 2020, giving schools the opportunity to purchase and implement the curriculum in K-8 classrooms statewide. California HMH Science Dimensions was built and customized to meet the rigors of the state’s Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Addressing the unique needs of students and teachers, the program leverages the latest research and best practices included within the 2016 California Science Framework.
California HMH Science Dimensions offers a complete set of instructional learning tools designed to provide mastery of the Performance Expectations of the California Next Generation Science Standards through support of the three dimensions of science learning—Disciplinary Core Ideas, Science and Engineering Practices, and Crosscutting Concepts, which are woven together into each lesson to ensure a quality learning experience.
“California has been leading the charge when it comes to NGSS adoption, and HMH is excited to partner with districts statewide to implement Science Dimensions,” said Jim O’Neill, general manager, Core Solutions, HMH. “This program is the result of years of deep research and melds purposeful use of technology with the pure joy of scientific discovery. By creating authentic and inspiring learning opportunities, our goal is to empower today’s students to solve the STEM challenges of our future.”
The Science Dimensions authorship team is made up of recognized experts, several of whom were on the NGSS writing teams, including Dr. Cary Sneider of Portland State University, who was a team lead for NGSS. They ensured that the program met the high expectations of the state's framework.
California HMH Science Dimensions also includes a thoughtful, intentional approach to inclusivity that honors California’s groundbreaking FAIR Education Act, champions success for all students and reflects the region’s diverse populations and cultures. The program includes integrated English Language Development (ELD) instructional strategies throughout, and a “multi-tiered system of support” across student and educator materials includes supplemental resources to help teachers support diverse categories of learners in their classrooms.
To activate student-centered participation, the curriculum integrates hands-on opportunities throughout its lessons, bridging the space between content, concepts and the environment-at-large to fuel students’ curiosity and spark inquiry. Meaningful integration of technology complements high-quality content and an investigative approach to building science literacy. Unmatched blended professional learning supports educators in adoption and implementation.
