BOSTON – Global learning company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) is pleased to announce that Carol Jago, HMH author and program consultant, has been appointed to serve a four-year term on the National Assessment Governing Board as of October 1.
Jago joins the seven-person Board as a curriculum specialist and will work with legislators, educators, school leaders, and other stakeholders to shape policy for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), the country’s largest nationally representative assessment of student achievement. Upcoming NAEP initiatives that Jago and the Board will oversee include the inaugural Technology and Engineering Literacy assessment and the introduction to computer-based NAEP assessments.
“What I hope to contribute to this work is the perspective of a classroom teacher,” said Carol Jago. “As the National Assessment Governing Board reflects on the assessment landscape in this country, I will try to be a voice for common sense, creative thinking, and collaborative effort.”
Carol Jago has over 30 years’ experience teaching English in middle and high school and is the associate director of the California Reading and Literature Project at the University of California, Los Angeles. She is a past president of the National Council of Teachers of English and has served as AP Literature content advisor and chair of the English Academic Advisory committee for the College Board.
Jago is also a prolific author and has published six books with Heinemann, a division of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, including With Rigor for All, Come to Class, and Papers, Papers, Papers. Additionally, she is a lead consultant for two of HMH’s nationally recognized English Language Arts programs, Journeys and Collections, a co-author of Holt McDougal Literature, and an author of Steck-Vaughn Transitions: Preparing for College Writing.
“I can’t think of a better selection than Carol Jago,” said Mary Cullinane, Chief Content Officer, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. “She is one of our great educators – an amazing teacher, with experience and knowledge only matched by her deep passion for learning. Her expertise and dedication to students will be invaluable assets to the National Assessment Governing Board.”
The term for each member of the Board will extend to September 30, 2019.
