Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Names Mary Cullinane as Company’s First Chief Content Officer


BOSTON - Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) today announced the appointment of Mary Cullinane to Chief Content Officer (CCO) and Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs. Charged with spearheading the company’s content development strategy for the K-12 education market and consumer audiences, Mary will expand her current role at the Company to drive HMH’s content production and innovation efforts, developing the next generation of digital solutions while continuing to leverage the Company’s existing products and iconic brands.

As part of this new role, Mary will lead a team dedicated to the incubation of new products and education services across multiple platforms, designed to engage learners and readers on any device, in any environment. As CCO, she will be responsible for delivering interactive, innovative content solutions for K-12 learning that help educators and students succeed in the classroom and beyond. HMH will continue to focus on integrating curriculum and digital tools, as well as apps and games, to enhance educational products and meet the evolving demands of the market.

Mary joined HMH in January 2012 as the Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Social Responsibility, focusing on the company’s impact on the community, internal culture and external communications. Prior to that, Mary spent more than twenty years in innovation design and education technology, both as an educator and as the head of Microsoft’s education-related innovation programs and initiatives globally, including the development of Microsoft’s School of the Future in Philadelphia.

As EVP of Corporate Affairs, Mary will continue to lead the Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility organizations at HMH, ensuring that the Company effectively demonstrates the impact of its product offerings on the market and community.

A recognized leader in educational reform, Mary has testified before the U.S. Congress, regularly speaks at national and international conferences and co–authored the book What Next?, which documents lessons learned during the building of the School of the Future.
