11:00 am to 12:00 pm | Carol Jago "Reading with Purpose: When Students Exercise Their Right to Read with Intention, Comprehension Deepens" Few things are as likely to help students expand their horizons as purposeful reading. In this session participants will learn how to help students distinguish among the various purposes for reading and how to adjust their reading depending upon their reason for navigating the text. Participants will learn strategies for fostering reading independence and methods for providing scaffolding to hesitant and emerging readers. The session will also showcase new books sure to pique students' interest. We are firm believers in children's right to read for pleasure! |
11:30 am to 12:30 pm | Dr. Anne Cunningham "A Longitudinal Study of Prekindergarten’s Writing Development" Emergent writing is a complex achievement comprising a broad range of conceptual knowledge and procedural abilities, such as writing letters and beginning to spell words in alphabet languages. In this study of 64 prekindergarten-age children, the researchers tracked early writing development when mark-making becomes increasingly intentional and conventional—when scribbles turn into letters, words, and messages. Multilevel growth-curve model demonstrated that the development of early writing skills was substantial, highly variable, and often rapid. Implications for instruction are addressed. |
