Educational Research Institute of America (ERIA) conducted a pretest-posttest study during the 2015 to 2016 school year to determine the effectiveness of HMH Collections (2017) in Grades 6, 7, and 8. The sample included six teachers and their students, who were enrolled in three middle schools in two different states. Pretest and posttest assessments were developed to assess the program objectives for the particular unit being evaluated. Results indicate that HMH Collections is effective at improving students’ ability to analyze complex texts, determine evidence, reason critically, and communicate thoughtfully. These results held true for lower and higher performing students.
