Educational Research Institute of America (ERIA) conducted a pretest-posttest study to examine the effectiveness of the HMH Collections (2015) in Grades 7 and 9 during the 2014–2015 school year. Pretest and posttest assessments were developed to assess the program objectives and the Common Core State Standards. Study results indicate that Collections is effective at improving the ability of Grade 7 and 9 students to analyze complex texts, determine evidence, reason critically, and communicate thoughtfully. In addition, the results showed that students in Collections classrooms made statistically significant gains in both Grades 7 and 9 over the course of the full year, and the program was effective for both lower- and higher-scoring pretest students.
