A third-party quasi-experimental study conducted by JEM & R examined the relationship between HMH Into Literature® implementation and student English language arts (ELA) achievement in Grades 6–8. Using Texas STAAR® data from Spring 2021 and Spring 2022, researchers compared outcomes for 252 schools using Into Literature with 555 control schools.
Findings provide ESSA Tier 2 Moderate Evidence that Into Literature was associated with significantly higher ELA proficiency rates after both two and three years of program implementation. Positive achievement results were also observed across grade-level and subgroup analyses, with statistically significant findings for multiple student populations, including English learners, students with disabilities, and economically disadvantaged students.
Overall, the study adds to a growing body of evidence demonstrating positive literacy outcomes associated with Into Literature implementation in middle schools.
