Into Reading is a comprehensive English literacy curriculum for Grades K–6 built on a structured literacy approach. The program combines high-quality instructional materials with an evidence-based scope and sequence to build foundational literacy skills, reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary, and knowledge. Designed for whole-group, small-group, and independent instruction, Into Reading helps teachers deliver standards-aligned literacy instruction while supporting the diverse needs of elementary learners. HMH also offers the Spanish language arts curriculum, ¡Arriba la Lectura!, to support dual-language instruction and biliteracy development. 

Into Reading aligns with the science of reading through a structured literacy approach that provides explicit, systematic instruction in the five pillars of reading while also emphasizing language development, knowledge building, and writing throughout literacy instruction. Foundational skills such as phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency are taught through a research-based scope and sequence and applied through rich literary and informational texts, discussion, and writing to build vocabulary and strengthen reading comprehension. The program helps teachers implement evidence-based literacy practices into daily classroom instruction.

Into Reading organizes instruction through a systematic scope and sequence that builds literacy skills over time within a flexible 60- to 120-minute daily literacy block. The curriculum is organized into modules built around essential questions and knowledge-rich texts that integrate reading and writing, while daily lessons combine explicit whole-group instruction, teacher-led small-group learning, independent practice, and embedded assessment. Teachers can adjust instruction throughout the literacy block to provide targeted support while maintaining coherent, standards-aligned literacy instruction. 

Into Reading teaches foundational literacy skills through explicit, systematic instruction that follows an evidence-based scope and sequence. Students develop phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, high-frequency words, spelling, and fluency through direct instruction, guided practice, and cumulative review before applying these skills while reading rich literary and informational texts and writing in response to their learning. This integrated approach helps students build the foundational skills needed to become confident, proficient readers while connecting foundational learning to meaningful reading and writing experiences.

Into Reading builds reading comprehension and knowledge by engaging students with rich literary and informational texts organized around knowledge-rich topics and essential questions. Students strengthen comprehension through close reading, text-based discussion, vocabulary instruction, and writing, while connected text sets help them build knowledge and make connections across ideas and disciplines. Students build deeper comprehension and background knowledge while applying their learning through reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

Into Reading integrates writing throughout literacy instruction to help students strengthen communication, deepen comprehension, and build knowledge. Students write in response to literary and informational texts through a progression of modeled, shared, and independent writing experiences, applying reading, vocabulary, and language skills in authentic contexts. Purposeful writing experiences reinforce reading comprehension, critical thinking, and knowledge building while strengthening writing skills. Into Reading can also be paired with Writable^® for Grades 3–6 to extend writing instruction through scaffolded writing practice and feedback.

Into Reading supports differentiated instruction by providing flexible resources, embedded assessment, and data that help teachers respond to students’ individual learning needs. Teachers can use assessment insights to form flexible groups, adjust instruction, provide targeted support, and extend learning through teacher-led small-group instruction, while scaffolded resources and supports help meet the needs of diverse learners. The flexible instructional model helps teachers personalize instruction while ensuring all students can access grade-level literacy learning. Into Reading supports multilingual learners by embedding language development and instructional scaffolds throughout literacy instruction. Teachers can use both integrated and dedicated multilingual learner supports, oral language development routines, vocabulary instruction, and language scaffolds aligned to students’ proficiency levels to help students access grade-level content while building English language proficiency. Multilingual learners participate in the same core literacy instruction as their peers while drawing on their home languages, developing reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, and building confidence with academic English.

Into Reading includes comprehensive print and digital instructional materials for teachers and students. Teacher resources include the Teacher’s Guide with instructional prompts, scaffolds, ready-to-teach lessons, assessments, planning tools, and implementation resources available through HMH Ed™. Student materials include the program’s primary student resource, myBook, along with read-alouds, decodable texts, and knowledge-rich literary and informational texts that support daily literacy instruction. Print and digital resources work together to support whole-group instruction, small-group learning, independent practice, and differentiated literacy instruction.

Into Reading includes embedded assessments that help teachers monitor student progress, identify learning needs, and guide instruction throughout the school year. The program includes screening, diagnostic, progress monitoring, formative, and summative assessments that measure student learning across foundational literacy skills, reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary, and standards, while built-in reports provide actionable insights for instructional planning and flexible grouping. Assessment results help teachers adjust instruction, provide targeted support, and monitor student growth over time.

Students engage with interactive digital texts and complete assignments and assessments.
